1. The common features of the phraseological units
The phraseological unit, according to the modern definition is – stable traditionally repeating word combination.
According to the modern lexicology phraseological units are subdivided into three groups:
Any language has a definite number of the «unfree word combinations» which are equal neither to a word nor to a free word combination.
The difference between the phraseological unit and the free word combination is in the following: the meaning of the free word combination can be discovered from the meaning of each separate component. But the meaning of the phraseological unit cannot be discovered from the meaning of its components mostly, because the phraseological unit had come through the “semantical simplicity” process.
During the historical process the words meaning limiting of the phraseological unit components had place. Very often the meaning of the phraseological unit was forcibly changed totally.
So the difference between the phraseological unit and the single word is that the word often consists of the only one element, and the phraseological unit has at last two elements mainly.
